Center Hill Lake stands apart from many other lake communities because it is carefully managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). While guidelines are in place, the result is something buyers immediately notice—cleaner water, preserved shorelines, and a more peaceful, natural setting.
Strict shoreline management limits overdevelopment, meaning you won’t find overcrowded docks, cluttered waterfronts, or uncontrolled construction. Instead, the lake maintains its wide-open views, tree-lined shores, and scenic beauty that make it feel untouched and private.
Boating and safety regulations help reduce chaos on the water, creating a more enjoyable environment for cruising, fishing, and relaxing without the congestion found on many highly developed lakes.
Environmental protections—like firewood regulations and land-use controls—help preserve the surrounding forests and wildlife, ensuring the area stays green, healthy, and visually stunning year-round.
Camping and land-use guidelines also prevent overuse, so even during peak seasons, the lake retains a sense of space, quiet, and exclusivity that’s increasingly hard to find.
The result is a lake experience that feels more refined and more protected—not overbuilt, not overcrowded, and not losing its character over time.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) manages Center Hill Lake to ensure public safety, protect natural resources, and maintain an enjoyable recreational environment. The following guidelines outline important rules for visitors and property owners.
Boating safety is a top priority at Center Hill Lake. Visitors are strongly encouraged to wear life jackets at all times, especially due to fluctuating water levels and increased boat traffic.
The consumption of alcohol while operating a boat is discouraged for safety reasons.
Swimming is prohibited in designated high-risk areas, including boat ramps, marinas, mooring points, and areas near the dam. These restricted zones are clearly marked with buoys and, in some locations, a floating yellow pipeline.
Conditions near the dam can change rapidly due to water releases, which may occur without notice. Visitors should use extreme caution and avoid these areas when possible.
Fishing tournaments and other organized events require a permit obtained through the Resource Manager’s Office.
Camping and recreational use are available throughout designated areas, with reservations required for shelters and certain facilities. Reservations can be made up to 365 days in advance, with peak season typically running from May 1 through September 30.
Camping stays are limited to 14 days within any consecutive 30-day period.
Standard check-in time for campsites is 3:30 p.m., and check-out time is 2:30 p.m.
To help prevent the spread of invasive pests, only certified heat-treated firewood is permitted.
Pets are not allowed at designated swimming beaches. Camping & Recreation
Public hunting is permitted on most USACE-managed lands surrounding Center Hill Lake, except in developed recreation areas or locations clearly marked as “No Hunting” zones.
All hunters must comply with applicable state hunting laws and regulations, including those governing Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs).
Only portable tree stands that do not damage trees are allowed, and they must be removed after each use.
The shoreline at Center Hill Lake is governed by a Shoreline Management Plan established in 2016, which regulates development and private use of public land.
A permit is required for placing any structures in the lake, including items such as fish attractors or docks.
Firearms are generally prohibited on USACE-managed property, except for authorized law enforcement personnel or as permitted under federal regulation 36 CFR § 327.13.
